The Aboriginal Early Childhood Conference: Sparkling STEM
Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are ancient knowledge. Because we know that Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the oldest living culture in the world, the sciences, technologies, engineering and maths knowledge and practices are the most developed and sophisticated on this planet. The Aboriginal Early Childhood Conference this year is festooned with an incredible line up of Aboriginal experts in STEM.
This year’s 2-day conference will feature a unique approach to make the experience of learning together with a complete experience. As each of the Aboriginal experts shares their knowledge and practices, conference delegates will simultaneously engage in a beautiful hands-on practical experience related to the STEM content area as a holistic approach to experiencing Aboriginal knowledge and practices. Be prepared to have all of your senses ignited and to be completely immersed in innovative contemporary approaches to sophisticated ancient knowledge and practices.
The presentations from across the Country will bring you:
- Aboriginal approaches to brain research and neuroscience in community education
- Ancient Aboriginal technologies in current everyday practice
- Aboriginal knowledge as the way to combat climate change
- Aboriginal mapping of Country with children using robotics and drones
- Maths through kinship systems
- Small world approaches to big world stories
- Aboriginal astronomy
- Bush tucker
- Bush medicine
- Aboriginal early childhood practitioners’ panel
- Collective cultural yarning
Our unique conference will leave you feeling nourished and refreshed. The presentations will leave you with lots of ideas and practical ways to embed Aboriginal approaches to STEM in your service. Here is what people are saying about our conference...
"Jessica Staines and Dr. Red Ruby Scarlett did an outstanding job making the Annual Aboriginal Early Childhood Conference so spectacular.
Jessica & Red made it all come together into one respectful and very memorable conference. The amount of time they both put into the implementation, from planning, to set-up, and to ensure the two days went as smooth as possible and was inspiring for all participants to be apart of. Simply exceptional. It is clear that the work and tending to every little detail has greatly contributed to the success of the conference." C. Newman
"I attended the inaugural Aboriginal Early Childhood Conference in 2018 and was so inspired by the presentations, that I couldn’t wait to go again in 2019.
The conference organised by Jessica Staines and Dr. Red Ruby Scarlett exceeded expectations both in the running of the two day event, the Program and the conference dinner. There were a wide range of presenters and key note speakers who were passionate about sharing their knowledge and encouraged us to embrace Aboriginal and Torres Strait Culture within our own Early Childhood Services. The workshops I attended were amazing and I took away lots of new ideas and information. The highlights for me was the joint presentation by Dion Beasley and Johanna Bell , and being there for the launch of the new Playschool episode “Acknowledgement of Country”. I highly recommend this conference to all Early Childhood Educators – you won’t be disappointed! Jessica and Red know how to bring people together in a safe space to share their stories." Narelle Avis
"The Aboriginal Early Childhood Conference is a must for every educator, regardless of where you’re at in your journey of understanding and embedding Aboriginal perspectives into practice. Whether you want to build on current knowledge, learn something new or challenge your thinking, you will have the opportunity to do so during the wide variety of breakout sessions available at conference. Incredible keynote speakers, opportunities to network, documentation displays that inspire and a multitude of resources available for purchase, the Aboriginal Early Childhood Conference is one that should not be missed." Rhiannen Sugars
"Jessica Staines tells us that ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’ about aboriginal culture and history
What better way to learn than with other inspired and inspiring early childhood professionals! The annual Aboriginal Early Childhood Conference has opened the door for educators to hear insightful and inspiring discussions with keynote speakers and to participate in workshops provided by early childhood practitioners and community members. These experiences have enabled participants to develop and extend new understandings and ideas to explore, learn and share together. The associated positive networking opportunities have enabled continued growth personally and professionally in a supportive group for myself and many others." Heather Brady
